Case Study: A Theory of Change for Rosehill Arts

Rosehill Arts recently transformed its strategy and joined Arts Council England's National Portfolio of funded organisations. The Trust's team approached me to help them to develop a Theory of Change.

Over half a day in September 2023, I facilitated a creative, participatory workshop with the staff team. This produced a neat set of long-term changes that we all agreed the Trust is working towards in West Cumbria.

The team met online a few weeks later and I led an active workshop. We really scrutinised the activities the Trust plans to deliver, and what kind of experience people are expected to have when they take part. We really focussed on these 'active incredients' that make change possible.

I pulled all of this together into a one-page visual map showing our Theory of Change. This was supported with a longer 'assumptions' document in which we backed up all of our claims about how the Trusts' programme can deliver long term change in West Cumbria. This document draws on literature, research and evidence of 'what works', to show that the Trust really has applied theory to its strategy.

After a series of redrafts, once the Board and Executive agreed that the Theory of Change represented their approach, I produced an illustration of the model, as a road from the theatre, through the community, resulting in a connected community rich in culture and celebration.
