Theory of Change

Theory of Change is a comprehensive description and illustration of how and why a desired change is expected to happen as a result of a charity’s work.

Theory of Change is a concise description of how what you do as an organisation makes a long term impact.

It is a one page model that shows:

  • The difference you aim to make with your work

  • Why your work is needed

  • How you set about achieving  impact.

A carefully created theory of change helps an organisation, its stakeholders, staff and funders to understand a shared sense of purpose. It is also the foundation of an evaluation and impact strategy.

Example of my most recent Theory of Change work.

My approach to helping you set out your Theory of Change has four stages:

  • Desk-top review of grey literature

  • Facilitated workshop with key stakeholders

  • Review all background information, consolidate workshop outcomes and produce a draft ToC

  • Carefully examine each element of the draft in consultation until consensus is achieved.

I use structured conversations and active, participatory and creative card-sorting activities to ensure that everyone in the room has made a valuable contribution and all voices are heard equally.

“The work has really enabled us to stretch our thinking and provide us with a deeper understanding."

Daniel Whitehouse, Creative Director & Joint CEO
